Effective boiler water treatment focuses on three key areas to ensure system safety, efficiency, and longevity: corrosion protection, condensate line integrity, and scale prevention.
Boiler Corrosion Inhibition
Corrosion weakens boiler components, leading to leaks, failures, and costly repairs. Proper treatment preserves the metal's integrity and ensures safe, reliable operation over time.
Condensate Return and Steam Line Corrosion Inhibition
Corroded steam and condensate return lines can introduce contaminants into the boiler system that degrade boiler water quality and can damage equipment. Protecting these lines helps maintain system efficiency and reduces maintenance needs.
Boiler Scale Inhibition
Scale buildup from minerals reduces heat transfer, increases fuel usage, and risks overheating. Preventing scale keeps the boiler running efficiently and extends its service life.
Water Treatment Chemicals
Below are commonly used types of water treatment chemicals for inhibiting scale buildup within the boiler.
- EDTA is used to make hardness inert, which prevents hardness from turning to scale and removes it from the boiler via blowdown.
- Phosphate is used to precipitate hardness from boiler water. This form of sludge, when properly conditioned with polymers, is removed from the boiler via blowdown.
- Hydrochloric acid is used in an acid wash to remove scale that has formed on the boiler tubes.

The following types of water treatment chemicals are used for reducing the risk of corrosion within the boiler.
- Sulfite, also known as oxygen scavenger, is used to bond with dissolved oxygen, which is corrosive to boilers, removing it from the system to prevent corrosive reactions.
- Silica (silicate) is used to make a secondary passivating layer to protect the boiler from reacting with corrosive analytes, like chlorides, sulfates, and dissolved oxygen.
- Sodium hydroxide is used to provide the boiler with the ability to have a higher pH than under normal circumstances, which is why it is also known as a pH booster.

Evidence of tube corrosion
The common chemicals used to inhibit condensate corrosion are listed below.
- Neutralizing amines are volatile treatments fed into either the Feedwater Tank, Deaerator Tank, or the Steam Header. They buffer the condensate pH, raising it to an alkaline level, ideally between 8 and 9 on the pH scale.
- Filming amines are also volatile and work by forming a thin film on the metal surface that prevents contact with corrosive substances. The film-forming molecule has a hydrophobic tail that pushes water away from the metal surface that it adheres to.
