Quickly Quantifying Potential Savings When Evaluating a Miura Boiler Solution
One of the most common questions customers ask early in the sales process is simple: "How much could I save by switching to Miura?" Applications Engineering has developed a standard comparison format to answer that question quickly and consistently by comparing an existing boiler system against a proposed Miura configuration.
The Boiler Utility Comparison form is available for all Miura employees and representatives to use.
When Should It Be Used?
A boiler utility comparison is best suited for customers who already know their approximate steam demand and want a preliminary estimate of fuel consumption, utility costs, efficiency improvements, and operating savings. It is often used during initial project discussions to support payback and ROI conversations.
Required Inputs
To generate a meaningful comparison, the following information should be collected:
- Maximum, average, and minimum steam demand
- Operating steam pressure
- Feedwater temperature
- Condensate return percentage
- Fuel type and fuel costs
- Operating hours and days of operation
- Existing boiler manufacturer, model, capacity, and operating characteristics
- Existing boiler efficiency (or supporting monitoring data)
- Current utility costs for fuel, water, and electricity
If the existing boiler efficiency is unknown, available combustion monitoring data can be used to estimate efficiency through the Fuel-to-Steam Efficiency Calculator. Typical inputs include flue gas temperature, combustion air temperature, and oxygen content.
Outputs
The resulting report provides:
- Estimated fuel savings
- Water savings
- Electrical savings
- Efficiency improvements
- Utility cost comparisons
- Annual operating cost projections between the existing system and the proposed Miura system
Key Assumptions
Every comparison relies on assumptions that influence the final results:
- Boiler efficiency values are either provided by the customer or estimated from available operating data.
- Steam demand values represent actual operating conditions rather than design-only loads.
- Utility rates reflect current costs and are not adjusted for future market changes.
- Selected load profiles accurately represent facility operating patterns.
Limitations
The comparison is intended as a planning and sales-support tool rather than a guarantee of future performance. Results may differ if:
- Operating hours change significantly.
- Utility costs fluctuate.
- Actual loads differ from supplied information.
- Boiler efficiency assumptions are inaccurate.
- Feedwater conditions fall outside expected operating ranges.
Feedwater temperatures above 250°F should always be reviewed by Applications Engineering prior to proceeding because of potential impacts on feedwater pumps, economizers, and associated components.
