Operation Introduction
MW-U Softeners are all DUPLEX systems.
- Comes standard with (2) resin tanks.
- MW-U softeners function as ALTERNATING TANKS.
- The tanks are not used simultaneously for service. One tank is in Service, while the other is in Standby or Regeneration.
- This system allows for a CONTINUOUS SUPPLY OF SOFT WATER.
- The system also has troubleshooting benefits based around the two (2) tank design, such as automatic swapping of tanks if hardness leakage is detected.
- HARD WATER flows from the top and as it passes through the resin beads, Calcium and Magnesium ions are removed from the water. Then, the water exits the tank as SOFT WATER.
- MS-U utilizes SPLIT-FLOW REGENERATION.

Operation Details: Flow-Based Regeneration
MW-U softeners regenerate based on SERVICE FLOW to provide the most cost-effective and efficient system possible - we call this FLOW-BASED REGENERATION. They regenerate only when necessary, saving money, reducing maintenance, and lowering brine consumption when compared to the conventional timer-based system.
To exemplify the difference, we will look at some scenarios below. To set a foundation for the scenario, please read the following prompt:
- At the time of startup, the timer-based regenerating softener is set to regenerate at a calculated schedule. The flow-based regenerating softener will regenerate according to service flow. Assuming the same parameters and capabilities for hardness removal for each system, both types of softeners will regenerate at the same time.

Scenario 1: Reduced Steam Usage
Let's say that the customer suddenly reduces the amount of steam they need by half. As such, the amount of makeup work flowing through the system decreases. For a flow-based system, the softener will regenerate when 100% of the residual capacity is used, which means that the regeneration will be delayed by the reduction of steam usage. By contrast, a timer-based system would regenerate early with residual capacity remaining, wasting salt and water (unless the schedule was adjusted).

Scenario 2: Increased Steam Usage
Let's say that the customer suddenly increases the amount of steam they need by double. As such, the amount of makeup work flowing through the system increases. For a flow-based system, the softener will regenerate when 100% of the residual capacity is used, which means that the regeneration will be sped up by the increase of steam usage. By contrast, a timer-based system would regenerate later than necessary, resulting in hardness leakage from the system (unless the schedule was adjusted).
